We replace aluminium window rollers across Bengaluru. Under each sliding shutter sit two small wheels, and every open and close in the window's life runs on them. Dust grinds their bearings, monsoon damp rusts them, and one day the window needs a shove and a lift to move at all. Most people then simply stop opening that window, and a room loses its air. New rollers, sized to the shutter, start at ₹950 a pair, fitted, with the track cleaned as part of the same job.
The life and death of a window roller
A window roller is a small nylon or steel wheel on a bearing, held in an adjustable cradle in the shutter's bottom rail. It is a hard-working part in a dirty place: the track it runs in is an open dust tray facing a Bengaluru road.
Grit works into the bearing first. The wheel turns rough, then stiff, then not at all, and a wheel that stops turning grinds itself a flat side within weeks. That flat is the thud-thud-thud you feel when sliding a dying window.
Monsoon finishes the job. Water standing in a blocked track rusts steel wheels and axles, and after a wet season a window that was merely stiff often seizes completely.
Signs the rollers have gone
The window needs a lift to start moving. Worn rollers have sunk into their cradles, and the shutter is dragging on the track itself.
It screeches or grinds along its travel. That is the sound of a seized wheel skidding, or bare metal where a nylon tyre used to be.
It moves in jerks, gripping and releasing. Flat-spotted wheels do this, rolling and thudding on each rotation.
The shutter sits visibly crooked in its frame, higher at one end. One roller has collapsed entirely.
Any of these, and the window is also wearing out its track with every use, which is the more expensive part. Rollers changed at the screeching stage keep the track out of the story.
The replacement visit
The shutter lifts out of the frame, which is minutes on a healthy window and careful persuasion on a seized one. The old rollers come out of the bottom rail, and the new pair goes in.
Sizing matters: rollers vary by wheel diameter, tyre profile and cradle size, and the pair must match your section and the track shape. We carry the common patterns for the aluminium sections Bengaluru builds with, so most windows finish on the first visit.
The track is cleaned and its drain slots cleared before the shutter goes back, because dropping new wheels into the old grit restarts the clock. Then the roller height is adjusted so the shutter sits level, seals evenly, and slides with a finger.
What new window rollers cost
A pair of rollers for one shutter, supplied and fitted, starts at ₹950. Most windows have two sliding shutters, so a whole window is usually two pairs, and each additional shutter on the same visit stays at the per-pair rate.
Heavy shutters, tall balcony sliders and windows with unusual sections may need a costlier roller pattern, priced as the part.
The track clean, the drain clearing, the height adjustment and the lock alignment check are all inside the fitting, not extras. A window that slides but will not latch afterwards has not been repaired, so the visit ends when the shutter glides and locks.
