Because the shop and the home are usually the same family's, a repair visit here often covers both in one go — a display pane downstairs and a window upstairs. That is the efficient way to do it, and it is worth saying so when you call, because otherwise we come twice.
One visit for the shop and the flat
The travel and the setting up are the fixed costs of a small repair, and they do not increase because there are two floors to see.\n\nSo a display pane, a shop door adjustment and a bedroom window upstairs are best treated as one job.\n\nWhen you call, walk both floors first. People routinely remember the shop problem and forget the two things upstairs that have been annoying them for a year, and those are the cheapest to deal with while we are already there.

Where a front has been broken into, replacing like for like puts back exactly what failed.\n\nSo it is worth using the moment to change the specification: laminated rather than plain glass, and a check of how the frame holds the pane, because glass is often not the weak point.\n\nA pane properly held in a frame with a security bead is considerably harder to remove than the same pane in an ordinary bead. That detail costs very little and is usually what actually gave way.
Grilles on the floors above a shop
Upper floors above a shop are reachable from the shop's own shutter box or a parapet more often than owners realise.\n\nSo a first-floor window here is not in the same position as a first-floor window on an open street.\n\nWhen we fit or repair grilles above a shop we look at what can actually be climbed from outside, and treat the first floor as accessible where it is. We also fit an opening section with an internal catch, because a grille on the only window of a bedroom should still open from inside.
