The residential blocks here were built to a handful of specifications, so the same window and the same grille appear across hundreds of flats. That is genuinely useful for repairs: the faults are predictable, the parts are consistent, and several neighbours usually need the same thing at the same time.
Predictable faults across a whole block
Where an entire block was fitted out at once, the hardware reaches the end of its life at roughly the same time everywhere.
So if your window catch has failed, the same catch in the flats around you is close behind.
That is worth using. We are happy to quote several flats together, and the parts are then ordered once. It reduces what each household pays and it means one visit to the block rather than six over a year.
Grilles that were fitted to a common pattern
Grilles in these blocks generally follow one design across the elevation, which is part of why the buildings look coherent.
Replacing one in a different pattern is conspicuous, and societies here often care about it.
So we copy the existing pattern when a grille has to be replaced, working from the neighbouring ones. Where you want an opening section added for escape, that can be built into the same pattern rather than changing it, which usually settles any objection before it is raised.
Working in a flat with the original wiring in the walls
In blocks of this age the wiring is often surface-run or set shallow, and it does not follow modern conventions about where cables should be.
So a fixing for a grille, a mesh frame or a mirror can find a cable in a place no one would expect it.
We check before drilling rather than trusting the usual rules about vertical and horizontal zones. In a building of this vintage those rules were not in force when it was wired, and assuming they were is how a wall gets an unplanned repair.
