Flats here have been modernised repeatedly over the years, and the bathroom is usually the room that has seen the most work. That is worth knowing before fitting glass, because each round of tiling and re-plumbing has left something behind the surface that the next person has to work around.
Tile over tile, and what it does to a fixing
A common shortcut when redoing a bathroom is tiling over the existing tiles rather than removing them.\n\nThat leaves a layer that is bonded to another layer, and a fixing through both only grips the outer one properly.\n\nSo we sound the wall before drilling. Where there is a double layer we use a longer fixing that reaches the masonry behind, rather than one sized for a single tile bed. It is the same job with a different anchor, and it is the difference between an enclosure that holds and one that works loose.
Raised floors from a previous re-tiling
Each time a bathroom floor is re-tiled without lifting the old one, the floor rises a little, and the fall towards the drain changes with it.\n\nAfter two rounds the fall is often flatter than it was, and sometimes it runs the wrong way entirely.\n\nSo we check the fall with a level rather than assuming the room drains. Where it is flat, an enclosure with a sealed base holds water in. We would either leave a gap at the base or set a low threshold, and we say which when we measure.
Finding the original opening size
Altered bathrooms often have a shower area that is not a neat rectangle any more, because a wall was built or a niche added at some point.\n\nThe enclosure has to fit what is there now, not what the flat was built with.\n\nSo we measure at three heights and both diagonals rather than taking a width and a depth. In a room that has been altered twice, those numbers regularly disagree with each other, and knowing by how much is what lets us make glass that fits.
