Building here is dense, and a great many bathroom windows open onto a neighbouring wall a metre or two away. So these rooms get very little natural light, and the enclosure has a real effect on whether the bathroom is pleasant or gloomy. That makes the choice of glass a practical decision rather than a cosmetic one.
Why frosted glass is usually the wrong choice here
In a dark bathroom the instinct is to frost the enclosure for privacy, and it is generally a mistake.\n\nThe enclosure is inside the room — there is nobody on the other side of it — and frosting cuts what little light there is roughly in half.\n\nClear glass keeps the room as bright as it can be and makes it look considerably larger. Where the bathroom is shared and some screening is genuinely wanted, a frosted band rather than a frosted panel gives it without losing the light.

Where a bathroom window looks onto a wall a metre away, it is providing ventilation rather than light, and it is often frosted anyway.\n\nSo the useful improvement is usually not the glass but making sure the window still opens and the mesh is clear.\n\nA window that has been painted shut or has a clogged mesh is doing neither job. We check both as part of any bathroom work here, because a shower enclosure in a room that cannot ventilate is a damp problem waiting to happen.
Mirrors, which do more than the glass in a dark room
In a bathroom with little natural light, a well-placed mirror does more for the sense of space than any decision about the enclosure.\n\nA mirror opposite the light source, rather than beside it, doubles the apparent depth of the room and spreads what light there is.\n\nWe cut and fit mirrors to size and are happy to advise on placement while measuring for the enclosure.
