A great many bathrooms in these flats were built with a bath tub, and the tub is now unused, hard to get into and taking up most of the room. Converting that space into a shower is one of the most common jobs we do here, and it is more straightforward than people expect.
What is underneath a tub when it comes out
Removing a bath tub usually reveals unfinished floor and wall where the tub stood, because nothing was tiled behind something permanent.\n\nSo the conversion is not just glass — the area has to be made good, waterproofed and tiled before an enclosure goes anywhere near it.\n\nWe say that clearly at the quote, because the enclosure is the visible part and the preparation is most of the work. A shower fitted onto unfinished substrate leaks into the flat below, which is the outcome this whole sequence exists to prevent.
The floor level where the tub was
A tub sat above the floor and drained through its own trap, so the floor beneath it was never laid to fall anywhere.\n\nOnce the tub is gone, that area is often the flattest part of the bathroom, and it is exactly where the shower now is.\n\nSo the floor in the tub footprint usually has to be re-laid to fall towards a drain. It is a day's work by a tiler and it is not optional — without it the new shower area holds water regardless of how well the glass is sealed.
How much bigger the bathroom feels afterwards
This is the part worth saying plainly: taking out a tub and fitting a glass enclosure makes these bathrooms feel substantially larger.\n\nA tub occupies floor whether or not it is in use, and an opaque shower curtain divides a small room visually.\n\nClear glass in the same position does neither. The room reads as one space and the floor is usable. Of all the work we do in older flats, this is the one that changes how a room feels the most for the money.
