These are established homes, and a shower enclosure here is normally part of bringing an older bathroom up to date rather than a new fitting. The question people most often need answered is not which enclosure, but how much else has to change to make it work — and often the answer is less than they fear.
What actually has to change and what does not
People frequently assume an enclosure means retiling the bathroom, and usually it does not.\n\nIf the tiling is sound, the wall is reasonably flat and the floor falls to the drain, an enclosure goes onto the existing bathroom without any other work.\n\nSo the first thing we do is check those three things and tell you which apply. It is the cheapest possible outcome and it is the true one more often than not, which is worth saying before anybody budgets for a full bathroom.
Replacing a curtain with glass
Where a shower curtain is being replaced by glass, the wet area usually changes shape, because a curtain is forgiving about where the water goes and glass is not.\n\nA curtain rail can sit anywhere; an enclosure has to land on solid wall at both ends.\n\nSo the glass rarely follows exactly the line the curtain took, and that sometimes means the WC or the basin ends up just inside or outside the new line. We mark it on the floor first so that is a decision rather than a discovery.
Doors and the bathroom you already have
In these flats the bathroom door usually opens inwards and there is not much floor, so the shower door and the bathroom door compete for the same space.\n\nThe cheapest resolution is a sliding shower door, which needs no floor at all.\n\nThe next is rehanging the bathroom door to open outwards, which frees a surprising amount and is a small job. We mention both and let you decide, because the second changes the landing as well and not everybody wants that.
