A lot of the office work here is a cabin inside a unit where metal is cut, ground or welded. That is a specific hazard for glass, and it is one that is almost never designed for — which is why so many of these cabins have glass that looks permanently dirty within a year.
Why grinding sparks ruin glass permanently
Sparks from grinding or cutting steel are hot metal particles, and they arrive at the glass still molten.\n\nThey do not sit on the surface. They embed in it, and when they cool and rust they leave a permanent orange speck that cannot be cleaned off.\n\nA few weeks of that and a panel is hazed. So a cabin facing a grinding area needs either distance, a screen, or a sacrificial film on the glass that can be peeled and replaced. Ordinary cleaning will not recover it once it has happened.
Keeping metal dust out of a cabin
Fine metal dust in a workshop gets everywhere, and inside an office it settles on equipment as well as surfaces.\n\nA cabin with an ordinary door and a gap at the head is not sealed against it at all.\n\nSo where the cabin holds computers or records, it needs sealing properly: a full-height partition to the slab, a door with a brush or drop seal, and ideally slight positive pressure from the cabin's own air conditioning so air flows out rather than in. That last point costs nothing and is rarely thought of.
Glass that people work next to
In a unit, material is carried past the cabin constantly, and a length of steel swung round a corner will find the glass.\n\nSo the vulnerable part is the exposed vertical edge and the bottom metre, not the middle of the panel.\n\nWe protect those specifically — a channel on the exposed edge and a solid panel for the lower section rather than glass to the floor. It is cheaper than the glass it saves and it means the cabin still looks right after a year of ordinary work going on around it.
