Very little of what we fit in Chandni Chowk is a partition in the office sense. It is counters, display cases, a glazed screen across the front of a gaddi, a cabin at the back of a shop. The work is small and precise, and the whole job is shaped by the fact that every panel is carried in on foot.
Sizing glass to the lane, not to the shop
A vehicle cannot reach most of these shops, so glass comes the last stretch by hand through the lanes.\n\nThat sets a hard limit on panel size, and it is usually tighter than the shop would allow. A lane with a turn, an overhang and people moving through it is the real constraint.\n\nSo we walk the route from where the vehicle can stop to the shop door before sizing anything. It is the first thing we do here, and it decides how the counter or screen is divided.
Display cases that lock and still show the goods
A display case in these markets has to do two contradictory things: show everything and secure it.\n\nGlass on all visible faces with a lockable rear access is the usual answer, so the customer sees the goods and the shopkeeper reaches them from behind.\n\nThe hinge and lock take the wear, not the glass. Cases here are opened hundreds of times a day, so the hardware is what we spend on. A cheap lock on a display case fails within a season and then the case is either open or unusable.
Working in a shop that does not close
Most of these businesses trade every day, and the shop is often the only way in and out of the floors above.\n\nSo we work in short stages rather than taking the shop apart. Measure one day, bring the finished glass another, fit it in a couple of hours.\n\nAnything that makes dust gets done first thing, before the shutters go up. We would rather make three short visits than one long one that stops trade, and on this street that is what people actually want.
