Most offices here sit inside an industrial shed, and the complaint is almost never about the partition — it is that the cabin is unbearable by the afternoon. A metal-roofed building gets very hot, and a glass box inside it gets hotter. That is worth designing for rather than solving later with a larger air conditioner.
Why a glass cabin in a shed overheats
A shed roof radiates heat downward through the afternoon, and a cabin with an open top takes all of it.
Glass then holds that heat, and a sealed cabin has no way to lose it.
So the useful moves are structural rather than mechanical: put a solid lid on the cabin rather than leaving it open to the roof, insulate that lid, and keep the cabin away from the sunniest wall. Doing those three makes the air conditioning work; adding capacity without them does not.
Which side of the building the cabin should be on
The west-facing wall of a shed is the hottest surface in the building through the afternoon, and a cabin against it inherits that heat.
Moving the cabin to a north or east side, or one wall in from the elevation, makes a real difference and costs nothing.
So we ask which way the building faces before agreeing a position. It is a free improvement and it is usually available, because the first position suggested was chosen for convenience rather than for temperature.
Glass that does not add to the heat
Where a cabin has to face an external wall with glazing, the glass itself can be specified to reject some heat.
A reflective or heat-absorbing glass cuts solar gain noticeably, and costs more than plain float.
We would spend on that only after the lid and the position are dealt with, because those two do more for less. Specifying expensive glass into a cabin that is open to a hot roof is money in the wrong place, and we say so.
