A lot of the office work on Surajkund Road happens inside a building that was not built as an office. A studio in a farmhouse, a design practice in a converted ground floor, a company in a house on Ankhir side. The glass is ordinary; what it has to fix into is not.
Fixing to stone, brick and plaster in one run
A partition in a purpose-built office fixes into plasterboard and a level slab, the same way along its whole length. Here one run can cross a stone wall, a brick return and a plastered column.
Each of those takes a different anchor, and the wrong one either spins in the hole or splits the face. So we drill a test hole before quoting rather than after starting.
It adds half an hour to the survey. It is the difference between a channel that holds for years and one that loosens the first time somebody leans on the glass.
Long rooms and where the joint has to fall
Rooms in these buildings are often longer than a standard office bay. Glass comes in finite sizes, so a long partition is always more than one panel, and the question is where the joints land.
Put a joint in the middle of a sightline and it is the first thing anybody sees. Put it against a column, a beam drop or a door frame and it reads as part of the building.
We set the joints on site with you before ordering. Once the glass is cut the joints are fixed, so this is a five-minute conversation that cannot be had later.
Ceilings that are not flat, and what that does to a head channel
The head channel is the track the glass sits into at the top. It needs a straight, level line to fix to.
Ceilings in converted buildings are often not level, and some are not flat either - a sloped soffit, a beam crossing halfway, a dropped section over what used to be a passage.
Where that happens we either follow the ceiling and cut the glass to match, or level the channel and close the gap above it. Following the ceiling looks better and costs more, because every panel is then a different height. We show you both on site and you choose.
