Almost every office here occupies a floor of a building that was not built for offices - a studio above a shop in the Village, a practice in an SDA block, a small firm on a residential floor. The partitions are ordinary. Getting them into the building, and fixing them to it, is the part that needs thought.

Buildings in and around the Village have narrow stairs, often with two turns and a low soffit over the half-landing.\n\nGlass is rigid, so the limit is not the width of the stair but the diagonal at the tightest turn.\n\nWe measure that diagonal rather than estimating it, and size panels to pass it with room to be handled safely. A panel that technically fits but has to be forced is a panel that gets chipped at the edge, and a chipped edge fails later without warning.
Fixing into a floor that was a bedroom
A residential floor has a thinner slab and a different finish from an office floor, and the top of the partition often meets a ceiling with services already run through it.\n\nSo before fixing a head channel we find out what is above the line - a conduit, a duct, a beam - because drilling into a live conduit is the one mistake that stops the whole building.\n\nThat means locating services first and adjusting the line by a few centimetres where needed. It is a short job and it is never the thing anyone wants to pay for until it is skipped once.
Keeping a small floor from feeling smaller
These floors are not large, and the instinct with a partition is to divide the space into rooms.\n\nFull-height clear glass divides sound and sightlines without dividing the light, which is why it suits a small floor much better than a stud wall.\n\nWhere privacy is genuinely needed, frosting a band rather than the whole panel keeps the sense of the whole floor. Frosting an entire partition in a room this size makes it feel like two cupboards, and that is usually regretted within a month.
