Most offices here occupy an industrial plot, and they are far denser in cabling and equipment than the building was ever designed for. So the interesting part of a fit-out is not the glass — it is where the cables and the server room go, and those have to be settled with the partitions rather than after them.
Cabling decided with the partition, not after it
These buildings have no raised floor and often no proper trunking, so cables run wherever they were first pulled.
Add cabins across that and partitions land on existing routes, with cables ending up taped across doorways.
So we build the route into the partition — a floor channel in the base, or a service gap at skirting level — and agree it with whoever is doing the network before anything is fixed. It is a detail at design stage and an unfixable mess if it is left out.
Where a server room belongs
A server room wants the opposite of everything else on the floor: no external wall, no window, a solid lockable door and its own cooling.
So it should be placed first, on the inside of the floor, and the glazed rooms laid out around it.
That also puts it where daylight is worst, which is the one room where that genuinely does not matter. Deciding it at the start is free; discovering afterwards that the only available space has a west-facing wall is expensive in cooling for years.
Cooling a floor that has been divided
An industrial building usually has a few large units sized for one open volume, and cabins change where the cool air can reach.
A room built across the throw of a unit is uncomfortable from the first day, and no amount of glass fixes it.
So we set the partition lines against where the units actually blow, and leave a transfer gap above a partition where a room has to sit in a poor position. It is not elegant and it is considerably better than a room nobody will work in.
