Practices next to a hospital see people who have come from it: on a wheelchair, with a stick, with somebody supporting them, occasionally on a trolley. That changes the partition layout in ways an ordinary office fit-out never has to consider, and all of them are cheaper to design in than to retrofit.
Doorways sized for how people actually arrive
A standard office door is comfortable for somebody walking and tight for a wheelchair, and impossible for a wheelchair with somebody pushing alongside.\n\nSo doorways in these practices want to be wider than standard, and the clear opening matters rather than the frame size — a door leaf swinging back into the opening takes width away.\n\nWe measure the clear opening rather than the doorset, and where a room will see wheelchairs we would fit a door that opens flat against the wall. It costs the same and it has to be asked for.
Nothing to trip on at a threshold
A threshold strip at a doorway is a trip hazard for somebody unsteady and a genuine obstacle for a wheel.\n\nSo partitions in these buildings should meet the floor flush, with no upstand at a doorway at all.\n\nThat is a detail in how the partition base is set rather than an extra cost, and it is the thing most commonly got wrong because it is invisible on a drawing. We detail it flush as standard here and say so, because the alternative is a permanent obstacle in a building full of people who cannot easily step over one.
Room for somebody to turn
A corridor or a waiting area that works for people walking can be unusable for a wheelchair, because turning needs far more space than passing.\n\nSo the layout question is not whether the route is wide enough but whether there is somewhere to turn at each end of it.\n\nWe set partitions out with that in mind and check it on the floor rather than on paper. It usually costs nothing, because the space exists and was simply allocated to a room that did not need it.
