A common arrangement near the highway is a working unit at ground level with an office built on the floor above it, reached by an external staircase rather than through the unit. That external stair is the thing that shapes the whole job, because everything has to come up it.
An external stair sets the panel size
An outside staircase is usually steel, narrow, and often with a half-landing and a handrail on both sides.\n\nWhat limits a rigid glass panel is the diagonal at the turn combined with the handrail height, and those interact in ways that are hard to judge by eye.\n\nSo we measure the stair before sizing anything, including the handrails. Where nothing usable will pass we design the partitions in narrower sections, or lift panels up to a window opening instead, which has to be decided before the glass is made.
An office above a working floor
A first-floor office over a unit takes the noise and sometimes the vibration of whatever is happening below.\n\nGlass partitions do nothing about that, because the sound arrives through the floor rather than the air.\n\nSo where quiet matters, the useful work is in the floor and the ceiling below rather than in the partitions, and we say so rather than selling glazing that will not help. Where it is only speech between rooms upstairs, sealing the partition head and the door does the job normally.
Heat on a first floor under a metal roof
These offices frequently sit directly under a sheet roof, which radiates heat downward all afternoon.\n\nA glass cabin with an open top takes all of it and cannot lose it.\n\nSo a solid insulated lid on the cabin, rather than leaving it open to the roof, does more for comfort than any amount of cooling capacity. It is the same point that applies in a shed, and on a first floor directly under the sheet it is even more pronounced.
