People are offered glass enclosures, acrylic panels and complete moulded cubicles, usually with whoever is selling favouring one. They genuinely suit different situations, and it is worth setting out what each is actually good and bad at before choosing, since we fit glass and have an obvious interest in saying so.
What glass does well and badly
Toughened glass is rigid, does not discolour, does not scratch under normal cleaning and can be made to any size, which is why it suits an irregular bathroom.\n\nIt is heavy, which is why the hinges matter, and it shows water marks.\n\nIt is also the only one of the three that looks the same in ten years as on the day it went in, provided it is wiped down. Where a bathroom is a reasonable size and reasonably square, it is the best of the three and we would say so.
Where acrylic or a moulded unit is genuinely better
A complete moulded cubicle brings its own tray, walls and drainage, which means it does not depend on the bathroom being sound.\n\nIn a room where the floor does not drain, the walls are poor and retiling is not happening, that is a real advantage and glass is not the answer.\n\nIt is also lighter, which matters where fixings are weak. The cost is that it is a fixed size and shape, it scratches, and it discolours over years. We will point you at one where the bathroom genuinely calls for it.
What to ignore in the comparison
Price is the least useful basis for this decision, because the ranges overlap so much that a good moulded unit costs more than a plain glass screen.\n\nSo the honest question is whether the bathroom can support glass — square-ish walls, sound tiling, a floor that drains.\n\nWhere it can, glass. Where it cannot, and the room is not being rebuilt, a moulded unit. Nobody sells it that way, and it is the only version of the comparison that actually helps somebody choose.
