People often want to fit an enclosure now and retile later, spreading the cost. Sometimes that works perfectly well and sometimes it wastes the enclosure entirely. The difference is predictable, so it is worth asking before rather than finding out when the tiler arrives.
When fitting the glass first is fine
If the tiling in the shower area itself is sound and staying, and only the rest of the bathroom is being redone later, the enclosure can go in now.\n\nIt lands on tiling that is not changing, so nothing disturbs it.\n\nSo the question is not whether the bathroom is being redone but whether the specific walls and floor the glass touches are. We ask exactly that, and where the answer is no, fitting now is straightforward and sensible.
When it wastes the enclosure
If the wet area is being retiled later, the enclosure has to come out for the tiler and go back afterwards.\n\nIt can usually be removed carefully and refitted, but the seals and the silicone are consumed and there is a real risk of damage on the way out.\n\nSo you pay for removal and refitting on top, and you may pay for a panel. In that case waiting is cheaper, and we say so even though it delays the order — which is the honest position rather than the profitable one.
The half-way option
Where the bathroom needs work but the budget is not there, there is a middle course worth considering.\n\nA single fixed screen, made to size, costs considerably less than a full enclosure and can often be reused later as part of a larger layout.\n\nIt stops the spray reaching the rest of the room, which is usually the actual complaint, and it does not commit you to a layout before the room is finished. We would rather fit that well now than a full enclosure that comes out in a year.
