In most bathrooms we argue against sealing an enclosure to the ceiling, because it traps damp. A steam cubicle is the exception: it has to be sealed to work at all. It is the one enclosure that is genuinely different in construction, and it is worth knowing what it involves before deciding.

Why a steam cubicle is a different build

Steam only works in a fully sealed volume, so the enclosure runs to the ceiling with a sealed roof panel and a door that closes against a gasket on all four edges.\n\nEverything about that is the opposite of an ordinary shower enclosure, which needs a gap at the top to dry.\n\nSo it needs its own ventilation and drainage designed in rather than relying on the room, and the glass and the seals work harder because they are hot and wet for long periods. It is a specific build, and one fitted as a standard enclosure with a lid does not work.

What the room has to provide

A steam cubicle needs a sealed, sloped roof so condensate runs back rather than dripping, a drain inside it that can take continuous water, and a wall behind the generator's controls that can be accessed later.\n\nIt also needs the bathroom itself to ventilate well, because the steam that escapes when the door opens has to go somewhere.\n\nSo these are decided with whoever is doing the bathroom, not afterwards. We will say plainly when a room will not support one, because a steam cubicle in the wrong bathroom becomes a damp problem for the whole floor.

When an ordinary enclosure is the better answer

A steam cubicle is a real commitment: more glass, more sealing, a generator, service access and a room that has to cope with it.\n\nIf it is wanted because it sounds good rather than because it will be used, the honest answer is an ordinary enclosure and better ventilation.\n\nWe say that even where the larger job is available, because a sealed cubicle that is used twice a year is a maintenance liability rather than a luxury. Where it will genuinely be used, it is worth doing properly.

  3. We come and measureWe measure the opening and check the walls, floor and ceiling around it. Anything made to size is made to these measurements, so they must be right.
  4. You get a written priceIt lists each item, with GST as its own line. If anything about the job changes, we tell you before we go ahead.
  5. We fit itYou approve the price and pay the advance. Our own team fits the work, checks that every door and window opens and closes properly, and clears up. Most jobs are done in 3 to 4 days.

Common questions

Can our Sector 15A shower be made into a steam cubicle?

If the room supports it. Steam needs a fully sealed volume — a sealed sloped roof, a gasketed door on all four edges, its own drainage and service access — which is the opposite of an ordinary enclosure that needs a gap to dry.

What does the bathroom itself need?

Good ventilation, because steam escaping when the door opens has to go somewhere, plus a drain inside the cubicle that takes continuous water and accessible controls. We say plainly when a room will not support one.

Is it worth it?

If it will genuinely be used, yes, done properly. If it is wanted because it sounds good, an ordinary enclosure and better ventilation is the honest answer — a sealed cubicle used twice a year is a maintenance liability.
