Houses here have large fixed panes facing the green, and when one fails it is a different job from replacing an ordinary window. The glass is heavy, it has to be handled by several people, and getting it to the opening is usually harder than fitting it. None of that is difficult; all of it needs planning.
Weight decides how a large pane is handled
A large pane weighs far more than people expect, and past a certain size it cannot be carried by two people safely however strong they are.\n\nSo we work out the weight before anything else, and that determines how many people come and whether suction handling or lifting equipment is needed.\n\nThat is a cost on the job and it is not optional. A pane dropped because too few people were sent costs more than the whole difference, and it usually damages the opening on the way down.
Getting it to the opening
A large rigid pane has to reach its opening in one piece, and the route is frequently the binding constraint rather than the opening itself.\n\nA gate, a turn in a drive, a doorway, a staircase — any of those can stop a panel that fits the window perfectly.\n\nSo we walk the route before ordering and, where nothing adequate will pass, look at whether the pane can come in through another opening or over a boundary. It is much better decided at survey than with the glass standing in a driveway.
Why a large pane broke in the first place
Large fixed panes rarely break from impact in the middle. They break from edge stress, thermal movement or a frame that has moved.\n\nSo replacing the glass without understanding which of those it was frequently produces the same failure again.\n\nWe check the frame is square and the pane was bedded with proper setting blocks rather than sitting hard on the frame. Glass that is pinched at a corner will crack again, and that is a frame correction rather than a glass order.
