Mirrored and glazed sliding wardrobe doors are in almost every flat of this generation, and they are used several times a day for years by everybody in the household. They are also the item nobody thinks of as needing repair, so they are usually well past the point where a small job would have fixed them.
Why a wardrobe door starts jumping its track
A sliding wardrobe door hangs from or runs on small wheels, and those wheels carry a heavy mirrored panel for years.\n\nOnce they wear, the door drops slightly, and a dropped door catches at the bottom or jumps out of its guide.\n\nPeople then lift it back in, which wears the wheel further. New wheels and a cleaned track restore it completely, and it is an inexpensive job. Left long enough the panel edge gets chipped where it catches, and on a mirrored door a chipped edge eventually becomes a crack.
Mirrors on a door that moves
A mirror fixed to a moving door takes flexing that a wall mirror never does, and an ordinary mirror on a sliding door will eventually crack from that alone.\n\nA mirror made for this use has a backing film that holds it together if it does.\n\nSo when we replace a wardrobe mirror we use safety-backed glass as standard, particularly in a bedroom. It costs a little more and it is the difference between a crack that stays in the frame and a mirror shedding onto a bedroom floor.
Bottom tracks that collect everything
A bottom-running wardrobe track sits at floor level in a bedroom and fills with dust, hair and grit continuously.\n\nThat grit is what wears the wheels, so cleaning the track is the single maintenance that extends their life.\n\nIt takes a minute with a vacuum crevice tool and it is worth doing when the room is cleaned. Where a wardrobe is being repaired anyway, a top-hung arrangement avoids the problem entirely if the frame will carry it, and we will say whether yours can.
