In a very tall building people report doors that are heavy to open, close by themselves or slam without warning, and assume the closer has failed. Often it has not. Tall buildings move air through their shafts in a way low ones do not, and that air pushes on doors. It is worth understanding before replacing hardware that is working properly.
Why a door in a tall tower feels heavy
A tall building acts like a chimney: air moves up or down its lift shafts and stairwells depending on the temperature difference between inside and out.\n\nThat moving air puts real pressure across any door between a corridor and a shaft, or a flat and a corridor.\n\nSo a door can be genuinely hard to open at some times of year and normal at others, with nothing wrong with it. Replacing the closer does not help, and fitting a weaker one makes the door fail to latch when the pressure drops.
What can actually be done about it
The pressure is the building's, not the door's, so the honest answers are limited and worth knowing.\n\nAdjusting the closer to the strongest setting the users can still manage helps at the worst times and is a compromise.\n\nMaking sure the door seals properly reduces the airflow through it, which reduces the effect. Beyond that it is a building matter — lobby doors, shaft vents and so on — and we will say so rather than selling hardware that cannot fix it.
Balcony doors at height, which have a different problem
A balcony sliding door on a high floor takes far more wind load than the same door lower down, and wind drives rain into the track at pressures a ground-floor door never sees.\n\nSo the drainage slots in the outer track matter more here, and when they block, water is pushed inside rather than draining out.\n\nClearing them takes minutes and it is the single most useful maintenance on a high-floor balcony door. It is also the commonest cause of a leak that gets reported as a failed seal.
