A sliding shower door is the most practical layout in a small bathroom and the one with the most to go wrong, because it has moving parts in the wettest place in the house. Almost all of its problems come from three components, and all three are replaceable without touching the glass.

The rollers, which do the work

A sliding shower door hangs from or runs on small wheels, usually plastic or nylon with a metal pin.\n\nIn constant wet they wear and the pin corrodes, so the door begins to drag and eventually jumps.\n\nNew rollers restore it completely and it is an inexpensive job, provided it is done before the door starts catching on the glass or the frame. Once it has been dragged for months the panel edge is usually chipped, and on toughened glass a chipped edge is a reason to replace the panel.

The bottom guide, which everybody forgets

A sliding door has a small guide at the bottom that keeps it in line, and it is under water constantly.\n\nWhen it wears or breaks, the door swings at the bottom, which both lets water out and puts the load on the rollers unevenly.\n\nIt is the cheapest part on the whole enclosure and it causes symptoms people attribute to the rollers or the seal. So we check it first on any sliding door complaint, and it is surprisingly often the entire answer.

The track, and keeping it clear

A bottom track collects hair, soap residue and grit, and that is what wears the rollers and the guide.\n\nRinsing and wiping the track occasionally genuinely extends the life of both, and takes a few seconds.\n\nWhere a bathroom is being fitted new and the layout allows it, a top-hung slider with no bottom track avoids the problem entirely. It costs a little more and needs a head fixing that will carry the door, and we will say whether the wall above your opening can.

Common questions

Our Sector 55 sliding shower door drags. What is it?

Usually the rollers, which wear in constant wet, though we check the bottom guide first because it is the cheapest part and surprisingly often the whole answer. New rollers restore it, provided the panel edge has not been chipped by dragging.

The door swings at the bottom and lets water out.

That is the bottom guide, which is under water constantly and is the part everybody forgets. It keeps the door in line, and when it goes the load also falls unevenly on the rollers. It is the cheapest component on the enclosure.

How do we make a sliding door last?

Rinse and wipe the bottom track occasionally — it collects hair, soap residue and grit, and that is what wears the rollers and guide. In a new bathroom, a top-hung slider with no bottom track avoids it entirely if the wall above will carry it.
