An enclosure is sold, fitted and then left entirely to the household, with no word about what keeps it looking right. A few habits make a large difference over years, and none of them takes more than a minute. It is worth setting out, because the alternative is glass that looks old within a couple of years.
The first week matters most
Silicone cures over the first day or two and continues to harden for a while after that.\n\nSo the shower should not be used until we say, and for the first few days it is worth being gentle with the door rather than letting it swing to.\n\nDo not clean the silicone joint at all in the first week, and never with anything abrasive after that. Most of the seal failures we are called back to in the first year started with a joint that was scrubbed or used before it had set.
What actually keeps glass clear
Water marks come from droplets drying on the surface and leaving the minerals behind, which build into a haze that eventually etches in.\n\nOnce it has etched, no cleaner recovers it.\n\nSo the single most effective habit is wiping the glass down after use with a squeegee or a cloth, which takes about thirty seconds. It is worth more than any coating or any cleaner, and it is the difference between glass that looks new in five years and glass that has to be replaced.
What not to use on it
Abrasive powders and scouring pads scratch glass permanently, and scratches then hold dirt and show every mark.\n\nStrong acidic cleaners attack the seals and the metal finish even where they clean the glass.\n\nSo warm water, a mild detergent and a soft cloth is genuinely all it needs, with a proper limescale remover occasionally if the water is hard. We say this when we hand over, and it is the advice most likely to be ignored and most likely to have been worth following.
