Taking possession of a new flat produces a long list and no obvious order, and people frequently do things in a sequence that makes later items harder or more expensive. The shower enclosure has a natural place in that order, and it is worth knowing where it sits before starting anything.
What belongs before the enclosure
Anything that disturbs the bathroom walls or floor comes first: retiling if you are doing it, moving plumbing, and any work on the waterproofing.\n\nSo does the electrical work for a geyser, an extractor or a mirror light, because that means chasing walls.\n\nThe enclosure goes after all of it, because glass fitted before those trades gets damaged and the silicone joint gets disturbed. Where the bathroom is staying as handed over, none of this applies and the enclosure can go in straight away.
What belongs after it
Very little. Painting should be finished, the sanitaryware installed and the mirror fixed before we come.\n\nThe enclosure is genuinely one of the last things in a bathroom, which is why it is worth booking the survey early even if the fitting is weeks away.\n\nGlass has a lead time once ordered, so the useful sequence is: survey early, decide the layout, order when the bathroom is nearly finished, fit last. People commonly call us at the end, which puts a week's wait after everything else is done.
The rest of the flat, in a sensible order
Across the whole flat the same logic applies: anything that chases a wall or disturbs a floor first, then finishes, then glass and mesh last.\n\nSo grilles and mesh, which fix into masonry, come before painting; the enclosure comes after tiling.\n\nIt is worth writing the list in that order rather than by urgency. Most of the avoidable expense in fitting out a new flat comes from doing something that then has to be lifted, disturbed or protected while something else happens.
