The flats above these shops are reached by a staircase that was fitted in wherever there was room, and it is usually steep, narrow and turning. That is the defining constraint on a shower enclosure here, and it is worth planning around properly because the alternative is glass that cannot reach the bathroom.
Measuring a staircase that turns twice
A staircase with two turns has two separate constraints, and the tighter one is not always the obvious one.\n\nWhat limits a rigid panel is the diagonal through the turn combined with the headroom above it, and those interact.\n\nSo we measure both turns and the headroom at each, then work out the largest panel that can pass. It takes ten minutes at survey. It is considerably better than discovering on fitting day that the glass has to go back.
Assembling an enclosure inside the room
Where nothing large enough can get up the stairs, the enclosure is designed as several narrower sections joined on site.\n\nThat means more vertical joints, each of which is sealed, and a slightly different look from a single-panel enclosure.\n\nIt is not a compromise in performance — a properly made joint seals as well as a continuous panel — and it is what makes these bathrooms possible at all. We show you where the joints will fall before making anything, so the appearance is agreed rather than explained afterwards.
Carrying glass through a working shop
In most of these buildings the only way to the staircase is through the shop itself.\n\nSo the shop has to be clear for the few minutes it takes, and glass cannot be carried past customers.\n\nWe arrange that with the shop rather than the household, since they are the ones affected, and we do it before opening wherever possible. It is a short interruption if it is planned and a long one if the first anybody hears of it is when we arrive with a panel.
