When these plots were rebuilt as floors, the priority was rooms, and bathrooms — particularly the second one — took the space that remained. So a great many of the bathrooms here are long and narrow, which is the shape that stock enclosures handle worst and made-to-size glass handles easily.
Enclosures for a bathroom that is long and narrow
A narrow bathroom cannot take a square corner enclosure, because there is not enough width to stand in once the glass is in.\n\nThe layout that works is a single straight panel across the end of the room, leaving a walk-in opening, rather than a cubicle with a door.\n\nIt uses the full width of the room as the shower, contains the spray in the direction it actually travels, and has nothing to swing. In a narrow bathroom it is almost always the right answer, and it is usually cheaper than a cubicle.
Why a stock size rarely fits here
Stock enclosures are made in standard increments, and a rebuilt floor's second bathroom is whatever dimension was left over.\n\nSo the nearest stock size is either too big to fit or small enough to leave a gap that has to be packed and sealed.\n\nGlass cut to the measured opening costs slightly more than a stock panel and removes the problem entirely. In a room this tight, a packed gap is also the place the enclosure will eventually leak, so the cheaper option is not actually cheaper.
Working in the smaller bathroom of an occupied floor
The second bathroom is usually the one being improved, which is convenient — the household still has the main one while we work.\n\nSo these jobs are less disruptive than a main bathroom, and we can take the time to do the base detail properly rather than rushing to hand it back.\n\nWe still keep it to one continuous run rather than two visits. But where a floor has two bathrooms it is worth doing the awkward one first, precisely because there is no pressure to finish it in a day.
