Houses here have space, and the bathrooms reflect it. That opens up options that a flat does not have — a genuine walk-in, a separate wet area, a shower with two entry points — and it also means the enclosure has to be designed rather than selected. Most of the work here is in the layout decision.
A walk-in shower with no door at all
In a large bathroom the most satisfying layout is usually a walk-in: a fixed screen and an open entry, with the wet area big enough that water never reaches the opening.\n\nIt needs depth to work — the entry has to be far enough from the shower head — which is exactly what these bathrooms have.\n\nThere is nothing to open, nothing to wear out and nothing to clean but the glass. Where the room is deep enough we would recommend it over an enclosure with a door every time.
Why a bigger shower needs more thought about drainage
A large wet area collects water across a wider floor, and a single small drain at one end may not cope with it.\n\nThe result is water standing at the far corner after every shower, which is both unpleasant and bad for the grout.\n\nSo on a large walk-in the floor needs to fall from every direction towards the drain, not just along one axis. That is a tiling decision made before we arrive, so it is worth raising with whoever is doing the floor — and we will check it while measuring.
Very wide fixed panels, and what holds them
A wide fixed screen is heavy, and its entire weight is carried by the fixings at one edge and the floor channel.\n\nPast a certain width a single wall fixing is not enough, and the panel needs a bracing bar to the ceiling or the opposite wall.\n\nThat bar is visible, and people often ask to leave it out. We will not, past the width where it is needed — a large pane of glass held by two brackets is not something to take a view on. Below that width it is genuinely unnecessary and we say so.
