Bathrooms in these houses are often the size of a bedroom elsewhere, and they were designed rather than fitted in. That means the enclosure is usually part of a scheme somebody has drawn, and our job is making the drawing work in glass — which is not always possible exactly as drawn.
What a drawing asks for and glass can do
Designers regularly draw a single unbroken panel larger than glass is made, or a frameless door wider than hinges will carry.\n\nNeither is a criticism of the drawing; they are limits people outside the trade have no reason to know.\n\nSo when we are given a scheme we say early what is buildable as drawn, what needs a joint, and what needs a different hardware approach. Raising it at drawing stage is a conversation. Raising it after the tiling is set out is a problem.
Steam in a very large bathroom
A big bathroom with a large shower generates a lot of steam, and a large room does not clear it any faster than a small one — often slower, because the air moves less.\n\nSo a generous enclosure in a big room can leave the rest of the bathroom permanently humid.\n\nExtraction matters more here than in a compact bathroom, and it wants to be above the shower rather than by the door. We raise it because it is usually decided by somebody else, and an enclosure gets blamed for a ventilation problem it did not cause.
Getting very large panels into the house
Large bathrooms invite large panels, and a big panel is heavy enough that handling becomes the limiting factor rather than the doorway.\n\nA panel two people cannot safely lift up a staircase does not belong in an upstairs bathroom, whatever the drawing says.\n\nSo we work out the weight as well as the dimensions, and plan how many people it takes and by what route. On these houses access is usually generous, which is why genuinely large panels are possible here and rarely elsewhere.
