How much mess a replacement actually makes
Taking out an old enclosure and fitting a new one produces two kinds of mess: broken glass and drilling dust.
The glass is contained easily if the old panel is taken down whole rather than broken out, which is how we do it.
The dust is the part people underestimate. Drilling tile throws a fine dust that travels beyond the bathroom, so we sheet the doorway and vacuum at the drill rather than cleaning afterwards. It is why the job takes a little longer and leaves the flat usable.
Fitting around a household that is at home
In an occupied flat the bathroom is needed, and a full day without it is a real problem for a family.
So we sequence a replacement to keep the out-of-use window as short as we can: remove, prepare, fix and glaze in one continuous run rather than across two visits.
The part that cannot be shortened is the silicone curing before the shower is used. That is usually overnight, and we say so at the start so the evening can be planned rather than discovered.
Deciding between a screen and a full enclosure
Not every bathroom needs a full enclosure with a door, and in a modest family bathroom a single fixed screen often works better.
It stops the spray reaching the rest of the room, which is the actual complaint, and it has nothing to go wrong.
A full enclosure contains more and costs more, and it needs cleaning on more surfaces. So we ask what is actually bothering you about the bathroom now. Quite often the answer points to a screen rather than an enclosure, and that is worth saying.
