The flats here sit immediately behind one of West Delhi's busiest market strips, so the constraint on any job is getting materials to the door rather than anything inside the flat. Parking is difficult, the street is busy from mid-morning, and glass has to arrive before all that starts.
Why we arrive early on this side of the market
A vehicle carrying glass needs to stop close to the entrance, and by late morning that is not possible on these streets.\n\nSo deliveries here happen early, and the fitting starts early with them.\n\nThat means we need access at the time we say rather than an hour later, because a van standing on one of these roads holds up a great deal behind it. It is the one thing we ask people to be firm about when booking.
Dust from a market street, and a newly sealed enclosure
Fresh silicone stays tacky for some hours, and in a flat with the windows open onto a busy street it collects dust while it cures.\n\nDust in a curing joint stays there permanently and the joint looks grey rather than clean.\n\nSo we seal with the bathroom window shut and ask that it stays shut until the silicone has skinned. It is a small instruction and it is the difference between a joint that still looks right next year and one that never looked right.
Noise that travels in a dense block
These buildings are close together and drilling carries into neighbouring flats far more than people expect.\n\nThe fixing stage is perhaps forty minutes of actual drilling in a typical enclosure.\n\nSo we do all of it in one block rather than returning to it through the day, and we would rather do it mid-morning than very early, because the neighbours who are affected are not the ones who booked us. It costs nothing to be considerate about and it prevents most complaints.
