Damage in a furniture market comes from moving goods rather than from weather. A wardrobe carried through a doorway, a sofa turned in a showroom, a delivery trolley against a return panel. That is predictable damage, which means it is largely preventable, and prevention is cheaper than the glass.
Protecting the corners things actually hit
Almost all impact damage here is at the same places: the edge of a return panel by the door, the bottom corner of a front pane, and the exposed vertical edge of any freestanding glass.\n\nToughened glass is strong across its face and vulnerable at the edge, so a knock at the edge is what takes a panel out.\n\nSo we fit a channel or a frame at those specific points rather than heavier glass everywhere. It is far cheaper and it addresses where the damage happens rather than where it is feared.
Why a cracked pane should come out sooner than you think
A cracked pane in a showroom front is usually left because the shop is trading and the crack is stable.\n\nAnnealed float glass will hold a crack for a long time, but the panel is weak and the edges of the crack are sharp.\n\nToughened glass behaves differently: a crack in toughened glass means the whole panel is about to go, and it will go all at once. So the first question we ask is which it is, and if it is toughened it needs replacing promptly rather than when convenient.
Wide entrance doors in a furniture showroom
Doors here are made wide so stock can pass, and a wide glass door is heavy - which is exactly what shortens the life of its fittings.\n\nThe patch fitting at the bottom corner and the floor spring carry all of it, and on a door this size they wear noticeably faster.\n\nSo we fit heavier-rated hardware than a standard entrance would use, and we check the alignment on any visit rather than waiting to be called. A wide door that has started to drop damages its own glass at the corner, and that is the expensive failure.
