Windows and doors here were generally bought as the cheapest option available when the house was built, and they behave accordingly. The good news is that most of them are repairable, and upgrading the parts inside a sound frame gets you most of the way to a better window for a small fraction of the price.

Upgrading the parts rather than the window

In a budget window the frame is usually adequate and the moving parts are not.

Rollers, catches, hinges and gaskets are all standard components, and better versions of each will fit the same frame.

So a window that sticks, rattles and does not lock can often be brought back to working properly for the price of parts and an hour's labour. We always price that before pricing a replacement, because it is the right answer far more often than people expect.

uPVC that has gone chalky or yellow

White uPVC exposed to strong sun goes chalky on the surface and yellows over years, and people assume the window is finished.

It is a surface change, not a structural one. The frame underneath is usually sound and will go on working for years.

So unless it is cracked or distorted, discolouration alone is not a reason to replace a uPVC window. We will tell you that plainly rather than quote a replacement for something that is cosmetic.

Getting several neighbours done at once
