Central Market runs at a density that damages things: doors held open by crowds, front glass knocked by bags and trolleys, mirrors cracked, shutters run hard twice a day. Most of what we repair here is wear from sheer volume rather than any single incident, which makes it predictable and largely plannable.
Doors held open all day and closed hard at night
Many shops here prop the door open through trading and then close it hard at the end of the day.\n\nA closer that is held open against its spring for ten hours and then slammed wears in a way it was never designed for.\n\nIf the door is going to stay open, the honest answer is a hold-open device that takes the load off the closer, rather than a wedge. It costs very little, it stops the closer failing every year, and it is the single most useful thing we fit on this street.
Mirrors in a shop that is always full
Full-length mirrors in these shops get knocked constantly, and a mirror fixed only with adhesive eventually comes off the wall.\n\nA mirror falling in a crowded shop is a serious matter rather than an inconvenience.\n\nSo we fix shop mirrors mechanically, and we use safety-backed mirror glass where it is in a public area. Safety backing holds the pieces together if it breaks, which is the difference between a mess and an injury.
Planning repairs around the market's own rhythm
There is no quiet day in Central Market, but there are quiet hours, and they are early.\n\nSo almost everything here is done before opening rather than after closing, which also means the shop is presentable for the whole trading day.\n\nWe would rather book a run of shops on the same morning than attend each separately, and where several units on a row need work we will quote it that way. It is cheaper for everybody and it takes one disruption instead of four.
