A lot of these flats still have the windows and grilles they were built with, and those are now well past the age where parts are available. That changes the conversation: the question is rarely how to repair the original, but whether to renew it in a way that suits the block rather than fighting it.
When the original window is beyond parts
Original steel or early aluminium windows in these blocks use sections and fittings that have not been made for decades.\n\nSo a like-for-like repair is often genuinely impossible rather than just expensive.\n\nThe realistic options are to adapt a modern fitting where it can be made to work, or to replace the window with a new aluminium or uPVC unit sized to the opening. We will tell you honestly which applies rather than ordering parts that will not come.
Replacing a window in a block where everything matches
In a uniform DDA block the elevation reads as one thing, and a single replacement window in a different colour or division is noticeable from the street.\n\nThat matters to neighbours and sometimes to the society.\n\nSo we match the frame colour and the pane division to what is already there rather than fitting whatever is standard. It usually costs nothing extra to specify, and it is the difference between a repair nobody notices and one everybody does.
Grilles that were fitted and never opened
Nearly every flat here has window grilles, most fitted decades ago and fixed shut.\n\nA fixed grille across the only window of a room is a blocked escape route, and in an older block that is worth taking seriously.\n\nSo whenever we work on a grille we offer to fit an opening section with an internal catch on at least one window per room. It is inexpensive, it is no weaker from outside, and it is the change we would make in our own flats.
