Repairs here are office repairs: doors that have stopped closing properly, partitions that have been moved once too often, glass that has been chipped by a trolley. The pattern is consistent enough that we can usually tell you on the phone which of three things it is, though we will still look before quoting.
Three faults that cover most office door calls
A door that slams or drifts: the floor spring or overhead closer has worn. It is a wear item on a door used all day, not a fault with the door.
A door that catches at one corner: it has dropped, usually because a patch fitting has loosened or the spring pivot has worn. Adjusting or re-seating it is a short job.
A door that will not latch: the lock body or the strike alignment, often after the door has dropped a few millimetres. Fixing the drop usually fixes the latch as a consequence.
In all three the glass and the frame are sound. We check these before quoting anything larger, because the difference in cost between a mechanism and a door is very large.
Chipped and scratched partition glass
This is a specific problem on office floors and the honest answer is unwelcome, so it is better said early.
A chip on the edge of a toughened panel cannot be repaired. Toughened glass is under tension throughout, so grinding out a chip removes the very thing holding it together and the panel usually fails - sometimes not immediately, which is worse. A scratch in the face can occasionally be polished if it is very light, and cannot if it is not.
Anybody offering to repair a chipped toughened panel is doing something we would not do. The right answer is replacement, and made-to-size toughened glass takes three to five working days. It is worth protecting panel edges near trolley routes and doorways for exactly this reason.
Re-planning a partition without buying new glass
Offices here change shape often, and there is a real question about whether existing panels can be re-used.
With an aluminium-framed system, usually yes. The panels unbolt, the frame comes apart, and both can be re-set in a new layout provided the new room sizes suit the panel sizes you already own.
With frameless glass on patch fittings, usually not for a different size, because the fixing holes were drilled before toughening and cannot be moved. The panel can be re-used only where it goes back into an opening of the same dimensions.
We will survey what you have and tell you what is genuinely re-usable before quoting new glass. It is a smaller job for us and it is the correct answer.
