A broken window at home is the one repair people have no idea what to expect from, and the uncertainty is worse than the problem. It is a two-visit job for a reason that is worth explaining, and knowing the sequence in advance makes the whole thing considerably less stressful.
Why it takes two visits
Every pane is cut to its own opening, and openings are never quite the standard size they are supposed to be.\n\nSo the glass cannot be brought on the first visit — it has to be measured, then made, then fitted.\n\nThe first visit is therefore about making the opening safe rather than repairing it: taking out the loose glass, clearing the rebate, and boarding or taping the opening properly. The second fits the pane. Anyone promising both at once is either guessing the size or carrying the wrong glass.
How long the middle bit takes
Ordinary clear glass in a common thickness is usually a couple of days.\n\nToughened glass takes longer, because it is made to size and then heat treated, and it cannot be cut afterwards. Patterned or obscured glass depends entirely on whether the pattern is still made.\n\nSo we tell you which yours is at the first visit and give a real date rather than an optimistic one. The one that surprises people is patterned glass, where a discontinued pattern can mean rethinking the whole window.
Making a home safe rather than tidy
With children or animals in the house, the first visit matters more than the second.\n\nSo we clear the broken glass properly rather than sweeping the obvious pieces — including the rebate, where slivers sit and come out later when somebody touches the frame.\n\nThen the opening is closed against weather and against anybody getting through it. It is worth saying if the room is a child's bedroom or the window is at ground level, because that changes how we board rather than simply whether we do.
