Almost every enclosure sits on one of two things: a moulded tray, or the bathroom floor itself. People are rarely given the choice or told what it changes. The answer depends on your floor rather than your taste, and it is worth settling before anything is ordered.
What a tray actually does
A tray is a shaped moulded base with its own fall and its own outlet, so it does not rely on the bathroom floor draining correctly.\n\nThat is its whole advantage: where the floor is flat or falls the wrong way, a tray solves it without relaying anything.\n\nThe cost is a step to get over, a fixed size and shape you have to work to, and a junction between tray and floor that has to be sealed. In a bathroom that already drains properly it adds those three things for no benefit.
When the tiled floor is the better answer
Where the floor is sound and genuinely falls towards a drain, running the shower straight onto the tiling is better in almost every way.\n\nThere is no step, no size restriction, no extra junction to seal, and the room reads as one continuous space rather than being interrupted.\n\nSo we check the fall with a level first, and where it passes we would not fit a tray. We say so plainly, because a tray is an easy thing to sell and in a bathroom that already drains it is solving a problem you do not have.
The middle option nobody mentions
Where the floor nearly works — a slight fall, but not quite enough at one corner — there is an option between the two.\n\nA low threshold strip across the opening holds water back towards the drain side without a full tray and without a real step.\n\nIt is a few hundred rupees, it is barely visible, and it rescues a lot of bathrooms that would otherwise be told they need a tray or a relaid floor. We look for that before recommending either of the larger options.
