A good share of the work here is in a house the owner is building themselves, with their own mason, plumber and tiler. That is a different relationship from a finished flat: we are one trade among several, and when we come in relative to the others decides whether the job is straightforward or a compromise.
When to bring us in
The useful moment is after the plumbing is roughed in and before the tiler starts.\n\nAt that point the wet area can be set out to suit the enclosure, the floor falls laid to match, and any niche positioned clear of the glass line.\n\nAfterwards all three are fixed. It costs nothing to have us look then, because we are quoting anyway, and it is the single thing that most reduces compromises later. Most owners call after tiling, which is the commonest avoidable mistake here.
What to tell your tiler
Three things from us make the tiler's work and ours fit together: where the enclosure will land, so fixings avoid tile edges; that the floor must fall to the drain across the whole wet area; and that the wall in the glass line must be flat, not just plumb.\n\nA wall can be perfectly plumb and still bowed, and frameless glass cannot absorb a bow.\n\nWe are happy to mark the glass line on the wall before tiling so everybody is working to the same thing. It takes ten minutes and it removes most of what goes wrong.
Measuring only once the tiling is done
Glass is cut to the finished tiled dimension, not the bare wall, and tiling adds a surprising amount in a small room.\n\nSo we measure after tiling, which means a gap while the glass is made.\n\nThat gap is unavoidable and it should be in the programme rather than discovered at the end. Where somebody wants the enclosure the day the tiler finishes, the answer is that the glass has to be cut to something, and guessing the tile thickness is how gaps appear.
