A lot of these bathrooms have a tiled ledge or a low seat built into the shower area, either original or added during a renovation. It is genuinely useful and it complicates the enclosure, because a straight panel cannot simply pass over or stop at it without thought.
Glass meeting a ledge
A panel that runs down to a ledge and stops there leaves the gap below it open, and water runs straight out underneath.\n\nA panel that passes in front of the ledge stands proud of the wall with a space behind it that collects everything.\n\nThe answer is to cut the glass around the ledge and polish the cut edge, so the panel sits flat against both the wall and the ledge face. It costs more than a straight cut and it is the only version that actually seals.
Sealing along the top of a ledge
The top surface of a ledge slopes towards the room in most bathrooms, because it was tiled to shed water.\n\nGlass landing on that surface is sitting on a slope, and silicone alone on a sloping joint is what fails first.\n\nSo we set the glass with a proper channel or a bedding detail rather than relying on sealant, and we check which way the ledge actually falls before deciding. Where it falls outward, sometimes the honest answer is to move the glass line rather than fight it.
Whether the ledge should stay at all
Where a ledge is only being kept because it is there, it is worth asking whether it earns its place.\n\nIt takes floor area out of a small shower, it collects water, and it is a junction that has to be sealed for the life of the enclosure.\n\nIf it holds bottles and is used daily, keep it. If it is an accident of how the room was tiled, removing it during the work gives a simpler bathroom and a more reliable seal. We raise it rather than quietly designing around something nobody wanted.
