In a lot of these houses the bathroom is also the laundry, with the washing machine standing in it permanently. That is a genuine constraint on an enclosure and it is almost never mentioned when people ask for a quote, so we ask about it directly.
Working around a machine that is not moving
A washing machine takes floor, needs its lid or door to open, and has to stay connected.\n\nSo the enclosure has to be designed around it rather than the other way round, and the first thing to establish is whether it stays where it is.\n\nWe measure its position, its door swing and its hose run at the survey. An enclosure drawn without that is one that blocks the machine, which is discovered on fitting day and is nobody's idea of a good outcome.
Keeping the machine out of the spray
A washing machine sitting inside the splash line gets wet regularly, and water on and behind an appliance is a problem rather than an inconvenience.\n\nSo the enclosure has a second job here: keeping the shower water off the machine.\n\nThat usually means the glass runs further along the wall than it would otherwise need to, or the machine moves. Both are fine and it has to be decided deliberately, because a screen sized only for the shower leaves the machine exposed.
Drainage when two things use one outlet
In these bathrooms the machine usually discharges to the same floor drain the shower uses.\n\nThat is workable, and it means the drain has to cope with a machine emptying as well as a shower running.\n\nSo when we check the floor fall we look at where the machine hose discharges too. If the enclosure is sealed across the path between the machine and the drain, the water has nowhere to go, which is a straightforward mistake to avoid once anybody has thought about it.
