The ironmongery on a house — handles, hinges, catches, closers, locks — is the part that is touched most and thought about least. It is also inexpensive, and replacing a worn item early prevents damage to the door or window it is fitted to, which is where the real cost is.
Why a worn handle damages more than itself
A handle that has become loose is not just annoying: the movement works on the screws and then on the material around them.\n\nOn a uPVC or aluminium door that means the fixing holes elongate, and once elongated they will not hold a new handle properly either.\n\nSo a handle that has started to move is worth replacing while it is only the handle. It is a small part and a short job, and the alternative is a door leaf that needs repair before any handle will sit tight on it.
Closers that have never been adjusted
A door closer has two adjustments: the speed of the main swing and the speed of the final few inches.\n\nMost are set once at installation and never touched, which is why so many doors either slam or fail to latch.\n\nThe final few inches should be slower than the swing, so the door latches without banging. That is a screwdriver adjustment, not a part, and it takes a minute. We do it on any visit where we are looking at a door, and it is the most common thing nobody has ever done.
Getting the whole house done at once
Ironmongery wears at similar rates, so where one handle has gone the others are usually not far behind.\n\nIndividually none is worth a visit and together they are an hour or two.\n\nSo it is worth walking round and listing every handle that moves, every door that will not latch and every catch that has to be forced. Told in advance we bring the parts for all of them, and the cost per item is a fraction of what separate call-outs would be.

- You get a written priceIt lists each item, with GST as its own line. If anything about the job changes, we tell you before we go ahead.
- We fit itYou approve the price and pay the advance. Our own team fits the work, checks that every door and window opens and closes properly, and clears up. Most jobs are done in 3 to 4 days.
