Nearly every house here has a solid main door and a grille or mesh door outside it, used together — the grille closed for air and security during the day, the main door shut at night. That arrangement works well and it has particular failure points, most of which are cheap to deal with and usually left.
The grille door takes most of the wear
The outer grille door is opened and closed far more often than the main door, because it is the one used all day.\n\nSo its hinges, its catch and its closer wear out several times faster, while people maintain the main door instead.\n\nA grille door that has dropped drags on the threshold and eventually distorts, at which point it no longer latches and the security it was providing is notional. Re-setting the hinges early keeps it working; leaving it means replacing the frame.
Two doors that have to close past each other
The main door and the grille door swing in the same space, and if either drops they start to foul one another.\n\nPeople then force whichever is in the way, which damages both.\n\nSo when either door starts catching, the other is worth checking at the same visit. We look at both as one assembly rather than as two separate doors, because that is how they actually work and how they fail.
Locks that are the only thing securing the house
On an independent house the locks are doing the whole job, and a lock that has to be forced is one about to fail.\n\nWhen it does, you are either locked out or unable to secure the house, both of which become urgent immediately.\n\nSo a sticking lock is worth changing rather than easing. The part is inexpensive and the emergency is not, and it is much better dealt with at a planned visit than at ten at night on a door that will not lock.
