Matching an existing glass rather than replacing a pane
Glass is not one thing. Tint, thickness, coating and the pattern on obscured glass all vary, and a replacement pane that is slightly different sits in an elevation looking wrong.\n\nObscured and patterned glass is the hardest, because patterns are discontinued regularly.\n\nSo we take a sample or a photograph at the survey and match from that, rather than ordering the nearest thing. Where a pattern genuinely cannot be matched, we say so up front and discuss doing a whole elevation instead of one pane.
Repainting metalwork so it does not show a patch
A spot repair on a painted railing or grille is visible from the day it is done, because new paint over old never quite matches and ages differently.\n\nSo where appearance matters we repaint the whole run rather than the repaired section, and we take it back properly rather than painting over rust.\n\nThat costs more than a patch and it is usually what people here actually want. We quote both and let you choose, rather than quoting only the cheap one and leaving a visible mark.
Balcony and terrace glass on a large house
Railings and balustrades in glass are common on these houses, and they take weather on every face.\n\nWhat fails is rarely the glass. It is the fixing - the spigot or channel at the base, where water sits and the fixing corrodes inside the fitting where nobody looks.\n\nSo when we service a glass balustrade we take a spigot off and look inside rather than checking it by eye. A glass panel that is loose at the base is dangerous in a way that a loose window is not, which is why it is worth checking before it moves noticeably.
