Being near a main road shortens the life of most moving parts in a building. Tracks fill, seals harden, mesh clogs and handles wear. None of it is dramatic and all of it is cheaper to deal with early. We cover the full list here in aluminium, uPVC, wood and steel, including mesh, railings, mirrors and glass tops.
Seals harden before they leak
The rubber gasket around a window does two jobs: it keeps water out and it presses the pane against the frame.\n\nOver time it hardens and stops springing back, which is why an old window rattles slightly in wind before it ever leaks.\n\nA rattle is the warning. Replacing the gasket at that point is inexpensive and restores both the seal and the noise reduction. Waiting until water comes in usually means dealing with the frame as well, because water has already been sitting in it.
Mesh near a main road needs cleaning, not replacing
Mosquito mesh on a road-facing window clogs with road dust rather than tearing, and a clogged mesh blocks airflow almost completely.\n\nPeople replace it, and six months later it is the same.\n\nA mesh in its own removable frame can be lifted out, washed and put back in a few minutes. That is the difference worth paying for at the fitting stage: not a better mesh, but one that comes out. We fit them as removable frames as standard for that reason.
Door closers on an office near the road
An office door left ajar lets in everything the glazing was supposed to stop, which is why the closer matters more on a noisy elevation.\n\nA worn closer stops pulling the door the last inch, and that inch is a gap along the whole leaf.\n\nWe replace closers and floor springs and set the closing speed properly, which most are not. The final few inches should be slower than the swing, so the door latches without slamming - that is an adjustment, not a part, and it is usually never made.
How the job works
- Tell us about the jobSend a few photos, rough sizes and what you need. Use WhatsApp or the form. For a repair, a short video of the door moving helps a lot.
