A house in Sector 14 often has original wooden frames at the front, steel windows at the back and aluminium where something was replaced in the nineties. Each needs a different repair, and a visit here usually deals with two or three of them. We also do staircase railings, mesh, mirrors and glass tops.
Three kinds of window in one house
Wood, steel and aluminium fail in completely different ways, which is why a single quote for the whole house is usually wrong.\n\nWood swells, rots at the bottom rail and loses its putty. Steel rusts at the hinge and the stay. Aluminium wears at the rollers and hardens at the gaskets.\n\nSo we go round the house and list them individually before pricing. Often two thirds are repairable and one third needs replacing, and knowing which is which is most of the value of the visit.

The staircase railing is usually the original, in mild steel, and it is the one piece of metalwork everybody touches every day.\n\nWhat fails is the fixing at the bottom of a baluster, where it enters the step. Water has sat there for years and the section has rusted inside the hole.\n\nA railing that moves when you lean on it has usually gone at two or three of those points, not all of them. We cut out and re-set the failed balusters rather than replacing the run, which keeps the original railing and costs far less.
Replacing one window to match the others
When a single window has to be replaced in an old house, matching matters more than it does in a new one.\n\nA modern aluminium window beside three original wooden ones looks exactly like what it is, particularly from the street.\n\nSo we ask whether the elevation matters before quoting. A wooden frame can often be repaired and reglazed rather than replaced, and where a replacement is unavoidable we can match the sightlines and the division of the panes reasonably closely in aluminium or uPVC. It is worth saying at the start.
