In a house with children the windows above ground level are the thing worth attention, and they are rarely the thing people call about. Everything else here is the ordinary list — mesh, handles, rollers, mirrors — but window safety on an upper floor is cheap to address and easy to overlook entirely.
Restrictors on upper floor windows
A window restrictor limits how far a window opens, usually to a gap too narrow to climb through, and releases with a catch an adult can operate.\n\nThey cost very little and fit most existing windows without replacing anything.\n\nSo on an upper floor in a house with young children we would fit them as a matter of course. It is the cheapest safety item available on a window and it is almost never asked for, because most people do not know it exists.
Grilles that still let you out
Fixed grilles are common here and a grille across the only window of a room is also a blocked escape route.\n\nThat matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else in the house.\n\nSo where we fit or repair a grille we include an opening section with a simple internal catch on at least one window per room. It is no weaker from outside, it costs little, and it is what we would want in our own homes.
The ordinary list, done in one visit
Beyond that, work here is the familiar range: mesh that has clogged or torn, a handle that has snapped, a window gone stiff on its rollers, a bathroom mirror spotting at the edge.\n\nNone is worth a separate visit and together they are a morning.\n\nSo it is worth walking round before calling. Most households find three or four things once they look, and told in advance we bring the parts for all of them rather than coming back.
