These are family floors and a lot of them have young children, which changes two things about a shower enclosure: what the glass should be, and what happens at the edges and the door. Neither adds much to the cost and both are worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Why shower glass is always toughened
Every enclosure we fit uses toughened glass, and the reason is how it breaks rather than how strong it is.\n\nToughened glass breaks into small blunt granules instead of sharp shards, which in a bathroom with a child in it is the entire point.\n\nSo this is not an upgrade and it is not optional. If anybody offers a cheaper enclosure in ordinary glass, that is what has been left out, and it is worth asking the question directly.
Doors and fingers
A shower door closing on a small hand is a real risk, and it comes from the hinge side rather than the handle side.\n\nA door that swings freely and closes under its own weight is the one to avoid where there are young children.\n\nSo we fit hinges that hold the door where it is put rather than returning it to closed, or fit a sliding door which has no pinch point at all. Neither costs more; it is a matter of choosing, and it has to be asked for.
Edges at the height a child actually is
An exposed glass edge at adult waist height is at head height for a small child, and a polished edge is smooth but still an edge.\n\nSo in a family bathroom we avoid free-standing glass edges where we can, running panels to a wall or into a channel instead.\n\nWhere an exposed edge is unavoidable we round it rather than simply polishing it. It is a small detail in the making and it is the sort of thing that matters once rather than often.
How the job works
