In these older buildings the overhead tank often sits only a little above the top floor, so water pressure on the upper levels is noticeably weaker than below. That is worth knowing before choosing an enclosure, because pressure decides how far the spray actually travels and therefore how much glass you need.
Pressure decides how much screen you need
A shower at low pressure throws water a shorter distance than one at high pressure, and the wet area is correspondingly smaller.\n\nSo on a top floor with weak pressure, a modest fixed screen frequently contains everything, where the same room downstairs might need a full enclosure.\n\nWe ask which floor you are on and, where it matters, run the shower during the survey to see. It takes two minutes and it occasionally saves half the cost of the job.
If the pressure is later improved
People sometimes fit a pump or raise the tank after the enclosure is in, and the shower then throws water well beyond where it used to.\n\nAn enclosure sized to the old pressure will suddenly leak, and it will look like the enclosure has failed.\n\nSo we ask whether any change to the plumbing is planned. Where it is, we size for the pressure you will have rather than the pressure you have, which costs a little more now and avoids replacing the screen later.
Enclosing a shower in an older bathroom
These bathrooms were usually built as one open wet room with a single floor drain, and the drain is often not where the shower is.\n\nSo a sealed enclosure around an area that does not fall towards it becomes a tray.\n\nWe check the fall with a level before deciding the footprint, and where the floor will not cooperate we either move the enclosure to where it does or leave the base deliberately open at one point. Both work, and guessing does not.
