A house here typically has family bathrooms upstairs, a guest bathroom and a ground floor one that gets used by anybody who happens to be in the house. They are not the same job, and specifying all of them identically is how money ends up in the wrong rooms.
The ground floor bathroom takes the hardest use
The ground floor bathroom is used by visitors, by staff and by anybody coming in from the garden, often several times a day and rarely carefully.\n\nThat puts it closer to a commercial specification than a domestic one.\n\nSo the sensible fittings there are the simplest: a fixed screen rather than a door, a mechanically fixed mirror, hardware that cannot be forced the wrong way. It is less refined than an upstairs bathroom and it lasts several times as long.
Wet feet coming in from outside
A ground floor bathroom near a garden door gets water walked into it, which is the opposite of the usual problem.\n\nThat means the floor outside the enclosure gets wet as well as inside it, and a threshold that only keeps shower water in does half a job.\n\nSo we look at the whole floor rather than just the wet zone, and where water arrives from outside a small threshold at the door does more than anything about the enclosure. It is worth mentioning, because nobody thinks to.
Guest bathrooms, which are barely used
A guest bathroom is used a few times a year, and specifying it like a family bathroom is money spent where nothing will wear.\n\nSo this is the room where a frameless enclosure makes sense on appearance alone, because the hardware will never be tested.\n\nIt is also the room to do first if a house is being done in stages, since it is the one nobody misses while the work happens. We suggest that order rather than starting with the bathroom everybody uses.
