Houses here were built when bathrooms were given the minimum space, and a good number of people now want more than the room allows. That raises a question we get asked often and rarely see answered honestly: whether it is worth enlarging the bathroom rather than fitting around its size.
When enlarging the bathroom is actually worth it
Taking a foot or two from an adjacent room changes what is possible in a small bathroom more than any choice of enclosure.\n\nIt is building work — a wall, tiling, sometimes moving a door — and it is not our trade, so we have no reason to push it.\n\nWhat we can say is where the line falls: below a certain width no enclosure design will make the room comfortable, and above it several will. We tell you which side yours is on, and we are happy to fit the best option either way.
Making the most of the room as it is
Where the bathroom stays as built, the layout does the work.\n\nA fixed screen rather than a cubicle keeps the floor open; a sliding door needs no swing; clear glass rather than frosted lets the eye reach the far wall and the room reads as its full size.\n\nThose three together make a genuine difference and none of them costs more than the alternative. It is the cheapest improvement available in a small bathroom and it is mostly a matter of choosing correctly.
Old fittings that constrain the layout
In these bathrooms the geyser, the pipework and sometimes the window are surface-mounted and in the way.\n\nMoving them is a separate trade and a separate cost, and it is usually unnecessary.\n\nSo we design around them: shifting the enclosure line, running a panel up to the pipe and sealing neatly against it, or setting the screen to one side. We mark the options on the wall at survey so you can see what each costs you in space.
